Overview of Youth Charter of Demand
In every society, the human cost of bad governance is evident in the low level of basic infrastructure, weak healthcare and educational systems, high unemployment, and the number of out-of-school children, among others; this is no different from the case of Akwa Ibom State. With over 46% of youth unemployment, occasioned by crucial factors ranging from the poor state of the economy and educational standard, poor enabling and secured environment, marginalized youths, and climate change crisis; more than ever, the 2023 Gubernatorial Election in Akwa Ibom State requires candidates to present ideas to solve existing challenges, plan and introduce novel concepts of societal and youth transformation.

On this basis, Young People from various youth groups across Akwa Ibom state gathered; identified priority issues affecting them, reviewed and analyzed these issues and used the analysis to develop a youth demand charter which they hope to present to the governorship candidates to set an agenda for youth development in the state.

The Youth Demand Charter is a policy statement that provides a framework for advancing the cause of youth development. It is pertinent that stakeholders especially, the political office holders prioritize the need to engage, inspire, and empower the youth for productive development. It defines a practical action plan for youth development. The Youth Demand Charter provide the governments, youth, civil society, and international partners with a framework that underlines the rights, duties, responsibilities, and freedoms of youth and government. It equally provides framework and practical guidelines for national, state and local parties involved with the expectation to support, engage, and improve the conditions of young people.

The Akwa Ibom State Youth Charter of Demand presents a declaration and submission of young people on the key priority issues affecting youths of the state and elucidates the directions to support the state in planning developmental provisions for young people. The state youth demand charter is a blueprint that guides stakeholders’ especially political office holders in setting an agenda for youth development in the state. It is indicative of the readiness of young people to meaningfully participate in the processes of governance in order to meet the needs and aspirations of the youths as well as seek a solution to their problems.
Nothing for the youths without the youths!
