As we promised the general public, the Akwa Ibom Governorship Debate lived up to expectation. The candidates articulated a well-thought out plan for a sustainable policy framework here in Akwa Ibom State.
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom state chapter, Clement Isong Foundation, ActionAid and other partners of the NUJ organised a governership debate on the 29th of January, 2023 for leading governorship candidates in Akwa Ibom state at the Ibom Icon Hotel, Akwa Ibom.
At the event, five (5) governorship candidates were hosted to deliberate on critical issues that affetc the people of Akwa Ibom state. The NUJ secured partnership with media houses comprising eleven (11) radio stations and six (6) television stations for a live broadcast of the event.
The debate was hosted in a bid to strengthen ideological exchange, political party participation, openness and accountability in the forthcoming election.
From the conversations at the event, gubernatorial candidates were able to articulate strategies and plans they have to address lingering issues that bother on seucrity, economy, employment, education, health, innovation, infrastructural development. Deepening democracy and entrenching an enduring democratic culture was a major aim for the organisation of the debate
Key highlights of the event were the signing of the Akwa Ibom Youth Demand Charter, open governance, peace accord
